Power Minister Summons AEDC, IBEDC, TCN Over Erratic Electricity Supply

The Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, has called for an urgent meeting with the Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), as well as the Managing Director of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The purpose of this meeting is to address the ongoing issues of erratic electricity supply in the country.

In a recent statement, Adelabu expressed his concern over the deteriorating power supply situation across Nigeria. Despite efforts to improve the situation, the power supply has continued to decline. The minister highlighted the pressure exerted on Generating Companies (GENCOs) to enhance their performance, leading to an increase in generation to over 4000MW.

However, certain distribution companies have failed to adequately distribute the power supplied by TCN, while vandalism of power infrastructure has worsened the problem in regions such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.

Adelabu assured the public that he and his team are working to address the challenges and gradually increase the availability of electricity across the nation. He emphasized the need for accountability and warned that severe consequences, including license revocation, may be imposed on distribution companies that fail to perform.

The minister also instructed TCN to prioritize repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to improve supply in affected regions. He has witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by the sector during recent supervisory visits to power-generating plants.

Plans are underway to settle outstanding debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies, which will alleviate the financial strain and contribute to improved generation levels nationwide. Adelabu urged electricity consumers to remain patient as the government works tirelessly to address these issues and provide better service to all Nigerians.

In conclusion, the meeting between the power minister and the heads of AEDC, IBEDC, and TCN is a crucial step towards addressing the nation’s erratic electricity supply. The government is committed to finding lasting solutions to the problem and improving the quality of electricity service for all Nigerians. While the process may be challenging, the government’s determination and ongoing efforts signal a promising future for Nigeria’s power sector.
